Syvecs SyvTCM – ZF 8HP Transmission Control
Standalone Control for the ZF 8HP45 and 8HP70
The Syvecs SyvTCM provides complete standalone control of supported ZF 8HP45 and 8HP70 Gen1 rear-wheel-drive automatic transmissions.
Designed for engine conversions, restomods, motorsport vehicles and custom installations, the SyvTCM allows the highly capable ZF 8HP transmission to be installed into vehicles that were never originally equipped with it.
The system can operate alongside a Syvecs ECU, aftermarket ECU, OEM engine management system or an older engine installation with minimal electronics.
By combining flexible CAN communication, direct sensor inputs, internal torque modelling and advanced transmission strategies, the SyvTCM provides everything required to achieve fast, smooth and repeatable gear changes across a wide range of vehicle applications.
Supported ZF 8HP Transmissions
The current SyvTCM 8HP control package supports selected:
- ZF 8HP45 Gen1 RWD transmissions
- ZF 8HP70 Gen1 RWD transmissions
Only compatible Gen1 rear-wheel-drive mechatronic units with supported Bosch TCU hardware can be used.
The Bosch TCU identification number must be checked before purchasing a transmission, as compatibility cannot be confirmed from the gearbox casing or donor vehicle alone.

Important: Not every Gen1 ZF 8HP mechatronic unit is compatible. Later units using the larger 2048 KB memory configuration are not currently supported.
A Complete Standalone 8HP Solution
The SyvTCM communicates directly with the original ZF transmission controller while managing the engine, vehicle, shifter and driver inputs required for correct gearbox operation.
This makes it possible to retain the original ZF hydraulic and clutch-control system without relying on the complete electronics package from the donor vehicle.

Works with Almost Any Engine Management System
When used with a Syvecs ECU, the required engine and vehicle data can be exchanged directly over CAN.
For other aftermarket or OEM ECUs, the SyvTCM can use a supported CAN protocol or its fully configurable Generic CAN Receive and Transmit functions.
The SyvTCM can also obtain important signals through its physical inputs. This makes the system suitable for older or unusual applications where little or no CAN data is available.
Engine speed can be obtained from:
- Syvecs ECU CAN
- Supported aftermarket ECU CAN
- Supported OEM CAN
- Generic configurable CAN
- A frequency-based engine-speed signal
- An injector or other suitable pulsed signal
Vehicle speed can be obtained from:
- The ZF 8HP output-shaft speed
- OEM or aftermarket CAN
- Wheel-speed sensors
- A suitable physical frequency input
Where the engine ECU cannot provide calculated torque values, the SyvTCM can generate its own estimated engine torque using configurable RPM, manifold-pressure, throttle-position and pedal-position tables.
Multiple Shifter Options
The SyvTCM supports several OEM and motorsport-style gear-selection options, allowing an installation to retain a factory appearance or use a simplified competition layout.
OEM Electronic Shifters
Supported options include:
- BMW F-Series electronic shifter
- Dodge electronic shifter
- Toyota Supra A90 electronic shifter
- VAG PQ electronic shifter
Depending on the selected shifter, supported functions can include:
- Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive selection
- Manual mode
- Sport mode
- Gear-position indication
- Shifter illumination
- Park-button operation
- Transbrake activation
CAN Keypads
The SyvTCM can also operate with:
- Grayhill / MoTeC CANopen keypads
- Generic CAN keypads
- Custom CAN switch panels
Keypad buttons can be assigned to functions including Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Manual mode, Sport mode, calibration selection and transbrake.
Paddle-Only Control
For motorsport and simplified custom installations, the transmission can be operated using two paddles and a brake input without a conventional electronic shifter.
A typical paddle-only configuration provides:
- Right paddle for Drive and upshifts
- Left paddle for Reverse and downshifts
- Both paddles together for Neutral
- Brake input for safe Drive and Reverse selection
- Configurable Manual and Automatic mode switching
Built-in speed and brake interlocks help prevent unsafe Park or Reverse selection.
Multiple Transmission Modes
The gearbox behaviour can be changed to suit different vehicles, driving styles and operating conditions.
Available modes include:
Street
Smooth clutch application and progressive shifts for normal road use.
Sport
Faster shift times, increased clutch pressure and a more responsive automatic shift strategy.
Track
Rapid gear changes and higher clutch pressures for circuit and high-performance applications.
Dynamic
Smooth operation at low load, with significantly faster shifts as engine load and torque increase.
Off-Road
Progressive low-load operation with revised low-gear behaviour for off-road applications.
Drag
Dedicated functionality for drag-racing applications, including launch and transbrake integration.
Transmission modes can be selected using a supported OEM shifter, keypad, physical input or configurable CAN signal.
Automatic and Manual Shift Control
The SyvTCM provides fully configurable Automatic and Manual shift strategies.
Automatic upshift schedules can be calibrated based on:
- Engine speed
- Throttle position
- Pedal position
- Vehicle speed
- Selected transmission mode
- Current gear
- Engine load and torque
Different shift schedules can be configured for road, sport and competition use.
In Manual mode, gear changes can be requested through the OEM shifter, paddles, keypad or CAN. Configurable protection strategies can prevent a downshift if it would cause excessive engine speed.
Temporary Manual mode can also be enabled while driving in Automatic mode. A paddle request can place the transmission into Manual mode for a configurable period before automatically returning to Drive.
Torque-Based Shift Management
Accurate torque information is essential for controlling clutch pressure and shift quality within the ZF 8HP transmission.
The SyvTCM supports:
- Actual engine torque
- Potential engine torque
- Driver-demanded torque
- Gearbox torque limits
- Shift torque-reduction requests
- Configurable torque multipliers
- Internal torque estimation
- Engine torque limiting during transmission faults
Torque values can be received directly from a compatible ECU or calculated internally by the SyvTCM.
During a gear change, the SyvTCM can transmit torque-reduction requests to the engine controller. A compatible ECU can then use ignition retard, fuel cut, throttle control or another suitable strategy to achieve the requested torque reduction.
This coordinated control reduces stress on the transmission while helping to deliver faster, smoother and more consistent shifts.
Launch Control and Transbrake
The SyvTCM 8HP control package includes advanced launch functionality for drag-racing and high-performance applications.
Available features include:
- First- or second-gear launch
- Custom Drive modes for Street mode below X torque and Track above X torque
- Transbrake control
- Controlled staging bump
- Configurable bump behaviour
- CAN-based launch request
- Engine and transmission launch synchronisation
- Temperature and operating-condition safety checks
Diagnostics and Gearbox Monitoring
The SyvTCM communicates directly with the ZF transmission controller and makes important gearbox information available within Syvecs SCal.
Available functions include:
- Read and clear transmission DTCs
- Reset gearbox adaptations
- Monitor transmission fault and limp status
- View selected and requested gear
- View input-shaft and output-shaft speeds
- Monitor gearbox oil temperature

Fault and limp information can also be transmitted to the engine ECU, allowing engine torque to be limited if the transmission reports a problem.
High-Speed Data Logging
The SyvTCM includes powerful onboard logging to help installers and calibrators analyse gearbox operation and shift quality.
Logging can be performed:
- Directly to a connected PC
- To the SyvTCM’s internal logging memory
- To a compatible USB memory stick
Available logging data includes:
- Selected and requested gear
- Input- and output-shaft speeds
- Shift state and shift time
- Individual clutch activity
- Gearbox oil temperature
- Torque-converter lock-up
- Actual, potential and requested engine torque
- Gearbox torque-limit requests

Recorded data can be opened and analysed using Syvecs SView software.
