Tools for making Harness'

Would someone be so kind to post the tools I will need to make my customised Engine harness for my Subaru GC8?

I need to crimp the wires into the Syvecs and onto the sensor connectors etc.

I would suggest just two Durite tools:

- 0-703-53 which will do the S6 terminals
- 0-703-52 which will do the majority of the GC8 terminals that have seals.

Agree with Stevie - a great site. Will have to up my game I think!

What wire do you want? I use Type 44 rather than 55 (a little cheaper, and easier to get hold of), and this can be bought fairly readily from the likes of Farnell (although not in all gauges or colours). RS do some Type 55 wire too, but even more limited colours and gauges.

I get mine direct from TE though.

If you just wanted smaller quantities of wire you could maybe buy one or two of this sort of thing. Obviously it's aimed at their own ecu's and labelled accordingly...but the colours and labels could still be handy when used for other purposes.

Sorry for my late reply. I just do not get any notifications at all.

It will be my first time crimping for harness. Not my first time wiring since I have a tremendous amount of experience in RF, Audio and in IT.

My purpose is to build a harness in tandem to my oem harness, so I can return to stock if I need too or limited in time. Just need to get it done. My S6 been sitting catching dust. Need to see it working and build that level of confidence working with it.

The harness I am planning to make with just be for the engine. I will splice into other wires for general operations.

So this is all new to me in the automotive market.

I have a similar design brief, in that my car is very rare (one of 25 made) and I have kept the OE sub harnesses and am making a specific 'engine only plug in' or in Mazda speak its referred too as the 'EM or Emissions Harness' that way if ever I did decide to sell it I can take out all my good electronics and put it back to totally stock set up easily/quickly.

In my case I decided to convert over all of my sensors and actuators on this specific engine set up to Deutsch DT series plugs (pig tails on injectors etc), make my own rotary switches, and use Mil spec white wire with all my own marking system. There are some things I took my own interpretation on and not followed the 'convention' but that is just me, if it helps I could document what I am doing in this install if it helps you out, but most of what Bob on RB site has put up is good information.

Biggest thing I found at the start working with the S8/F88 connectors 'Junior Timer terminals' was setting up my AMP crimper to do the job perfectly, without distorting the terminals and giving correct preload to the join on the wire and on the insulation as well. That is half the battle, once you sort that out it will be pretty smooth sailing, little basics like getting the wire strip right and crimp tool set up make all the difference, I went from wanting to throw the crimper across the work shop to doing it perfectly every time, wasted about 20 terminals to set it up right though and learn along the way. The round barrel type crimps on Autosport connectors or DT connectors are idiot proof by comparison and easy.

I wanted the S8 at the time, but financing was a prob and I thank the Guys over there, but now pressure to finish and install more Syvecs for potential projects.

Do you have a website or pictures I can see?
