Solid CEL

Post by ScoobyDuck »

Hi

Just back from a drive where after a spirited WOT 3rd to 4th the CEL was solidly on. Its set for knock warn although that is a flash so what is solid ? I'm hoping its not catastrofic det. Lol

Unfortunatly i dont have access to get the logs/errors off at the moment.

Cheers

I think the CEL remains on once the threshold has been exceeded - 5 degrees retardation maybe - and goes off either at the next power cycle or after some other time period; can't quite remember which but I know on mine it stays on for a while.

thanks for your 'thinking' Tim, i feared that may have been what it meant i.e. MAJOR det. issue happend.
It did extinguish with a key off/on.

I am trying to get the logs but doubt there will be anything there as it was not near the end of the journey.

can anyone please clarify 100% what a solid means?

It means you exceeded the ignition retard threshold as set in the calibration. It will stay on, as I said, until you cycle the ignition. I do not believe the CEL ever just flashes briefly for a det event.

Just to add, that if the knock retard drops below the threshold (which is configurable), the light should extinguish again (obviously power cycling does this, as would flashing the ECU). At present the only strategy that would flash the CEL is if it is assigned to the Error output, and the flash speed should reflect the nature of the error (sensor failure). At some point there will be a unification of warning strategies that will allow the CEL to be used for more information than it can currently convey.

Cheers,

Pat.

Tim / Pat

thanks. so it obvioulsy had a bit of a big knock/retard happen there. however, the light didnt go out when i was crusing along after this even and only did so about 5miles afterwards when i keyed off/on.

I have had the light flash previously which knock /retard events but never stay on.

if it should go off when the retard is taken off, how long is that in a cruse type running?

I've managed to get the logs off and unfortunatly they are, as i thought, not going back far enough. only 1 long log. which is odd as ive checked the settings and it should only do it at >3000rpm.

cheers

The retard can only be removed by the knock control system when it's active, in the same way it will only retard above a certain TPS and engine speed, the same goes for advancing again. It's likely that during cruise you didn't activate the knock control to remove the retard.

I wouldn't be too worried, you should check what the threshold is set to for the light to come on for your setup, it may only be 1.5 degrees for example which as some correction to gearchange related detonation is really not very much.

Paul

yep, its set to 1degree. Its flashed before but never stayed on, so i guess this time it must have lit the CEL on the retard, and i immediatly dropped out of knock control. Where as before i have still been in knock control and it extinguished the light straight away.

The gearbox is getting very noisy at the moment and will be removed v.soon, so it may well be gear change noise tripping the knock.

cheers for the input
