I have a 98 v4 sti, Im wondering if its easy enough to swap to newage coil packs. I did this on my simtek 94wrx by just removing the ingnitor and wiring each ignition feed to each coil coil pack, there were 3 wires on each coil pack, earth, signal and 12v feed.
Now the 98 has wasted spark so only has 2 ecu ignition outputs and a centre 12v feed to the single coil pack, so as before I remove the ignitor and use the centre 12v feed for power to each coil and then just keep the 2 ecu signal wires, I then use 1 signal wire to trigger 2 coil packs in wasted spark and the same with the other ecu signal wire?
Does this sound right?
Newage coil packs?
Re: Newage coil packs?
You can do that or run wires to the 12 pin molex plug on the PnP ECU and set it up as full sequential ignition using ignition outputs 3-6. This is what we've done on Clive's drag car.
Re: Newage coil packs?
Cheers Paul have put this on hold again, my coil pack had a crack in it so its a differnet car now.
Re: Newage coil packs?
Do I need to select anything else to run coil packs, I dont want to burn out any of the drivers.
Re: Newage coil packs?
Where can I get pins for the aux connector?
Re: Newage coil packs?
Provided we are talking about newage coils, and they are connected correctly then they should be fine.
I would use the original connector to supply 4 coils with +12v and ground, and then a new 4 pin connector in the engine bay to split the loom that goes to the ECU.
The Aux connector has ignition outputs 3-6 and so I connect them thus:
Cyl 1 = Ign 3
Cyl 2 = Ign 4
Cyl 3 = Ign 5
Cyl 4 = Ign 6
But before you try and configure it, you can test the ignition outputs using output test mode. BEFORE you enter output test mode you need to ensure that all the Ign Output Base states are "off" and the Ignition pulse duration are set to no more than 4.0 ms. Confirm the outputs are ordered as you expect, if there is an error, take note and then you can assign the correct cylinder to the coil pack (obv nicer to get it right first time though).
Then it should just work, there is no setting to swap wasted spark to sequential or anything. I would probably start with a dwell time of 3ms at 14v but I've not had issues with them a little higher, I will get round to measuring the proper dwell time of all these coils instead of relying on other info.
If you want a connector, I am sure I have a few, if not Tim at JTI will have some.

Re: Newage coil packs?
Thanks for the reply Paul, I have a connector and I got some pins from Andrew the other day so Im good to go, I have a newage inlet to fit aswell so Ill do the coil packs at the same time but I have to go work for a few weeks before I do.
