Connecting Racelogic VBox to Svvecs CAN system

Post by Hugh »

I purchased a Racelogic VBox some time ago and failed to get it to connect to my R35 GTR running Syvecs despite extensive help from Racelogic.

I wanted to revisit this issue to see if there is a way to resolve.

Reading the VBox instructions for the R35 GTR:-

https://www.racelogic.co.uk/_downloads/ ... 0(R35).pdf

I can see the CAN bus must be configured at a baud rate of 500k.

There are several mentions of Syvecs ECU's running at 1K bps, although nothing specific on the S6 Plus.

There does not be an option to configure the bus speed in SCal, although I can see there is also an RS232 pinout that duplicates the CAN

Is there a workaround to get the Syvecs CAN data at 500 K bps?

Thanks

I'd post in on the FB page too...

But I suspect as it's based around the S6, options will be less ? Does it's CAN run at 1.3Mbps for the Plus too ?

Thanks Stevie,

I had not spotted that the S6 CAN runs at 1.3Mbps.

Racelogic VBox is mainstream, so had assumed that would be accommodated somehow.

Hopefully see you at TOTB this year - nothing on the Straightliners website about it yet!

Can the data you need sent go via serial ?

Old S6 was 1.3, I'm not sure on the plus.

Hopefully we can make totb, if it is on this year, and travel is doable.

Hugh, let me know what you find out.
I have a VB3i and will be using that to validate the Syvecs 50hZ GPS, Have one million things on my own car so one less item to work out myself will be great.
p.s. Don't do Arsebook so please don't ask me to go there!

Will keep you posted Peter,

TimH reported on this thread that there were a number of ECU's that did not have CAN

viewtopic.php?p=3572#p3572

Going to check my serial number in the morning to ensure my ECU is not one of those listed as suffering from a manufacturing defect.

Stevie,

I believe the R35 GTR CAN bus works at 500K bps, so the data may be available elsewhere.

Racelogic were specific about the 500K requirement for CAN bus input, so not sure if I can solve this another way.

I don't think it would be possible for an S6PLus not to have CAN, as it uses CAN to talk to the onboard expander.

Try here, it seems to be frequented by more people than this forum.

I think for me the solution would be to receive the VBOX channels on the second CAN bus on the LR/Syvecs D4 dash (set to 500k), should work ok. Currently only getting in items S8, PDU, and AG50 (CANrx) on the CAN1 at 1M

S6 is only 1Mbit/s, unless you connect an I/O expander in which case it runs a bespoke, non-standard, 1.3Mbit/s point-to-point CAN link that cannot be shared with other devices.

S6+ has a built in I/O expander on an internal CAN bus and an outward-facing CANbus that is connected vi an internal "CAN bridge". It is the CAN bridge that interfaces to the vehicle CANbus. The R35 kits definitely need a CAN bridge - an external box in the case of earlier S8 kits, and the internal one on S6+ and onward (i.e. also S7-based kits).

The S6+ CANbus can be set to 500kbit but that is a function of the internal bridge programming from memory.

S8 and S7 have user-configurable CANbus speeds.

If you are on S6plus, the outward facing CANbus will be set to the same speed that the R35 uses - perhaps 500kbit/s I don't know - but Syvecs will be able to tell you.

The CAN stream will have any R35-specific messages but specific CAN TX frame/slot assignments so that the CAN bridge operates as required. It is this that probably means the datastream is incompatible with the VBox unless the VBox RX stream frame/slot assignments are configurable in their software.

My hunch is that the VBox "dictates" the stream required and this will not work.

Upgrade to an S7 and it can work as the S7 not only has an internal CAN bridge but also a second CAN datastream that you can configure as required (the bridge sits on CAN1; it is CAN2 you would connect to the VBox).

Or as has been suggested, use a decent dash with 2 CANbus interfaces and sort it that way...although you may not need the VBox with a decent dash perhaps? Dunno, never used a VBox lol.
