Seen the same happen to a Precision turbo once, although no EGT at the time

^ Nice :)

This car had a turbo that was selected way before the Syvecs was put on and in short it was much more suitable for a 2lt engine and not 4lt, anyway ran with what they had as it was there... of interest we had Type K on each cylinder then one right before turbine inlet and another on turbine exit a way down the exhaust system.

It has run from the log book around 17,000km (I need to double check?) but one of the many things that happens in a good long term test like this is you get to do real durability run on various items. One of the other failures was a melted catalyst (ended up trapped in rear muffler!) and as well as a collapsed flex pipe (only visible internally).

Engine leak down and compression is ok, time for much bigger turbo and a proper exhaust manifold too ;)

I'm enjoying this thread, I've fitted 5 x EGTs to my new engine, and I've got the ECUMaster EGT-CAN box providing their readings over CAN. I'm running firmware v620

My F88 ECU has Exhaust Gas Temp 1 and 2, which I can assign frames from the EGT-CAN box if I want to, but I cant find much information on how the ECU uses EGT1 and 2.

There is a gauge I can add for egtMax which is set to 850C, whereabouts is egtMax set and what bearing does egtMax have on the ECU?

There are a number of Engine Trips, but none of them are related to EGT, so is EGT something that the ECU can use to protect against running lean?

Used in fuel > cll, turbo corrections, to name a few. egt max is simply the highest of the various egt inputs ;) you can select it as a control variable in a CM map say a WgMapMax Adder that looks at egtMax and vehicleSpeed for example.

egt will always peak at 1.000L so technically running 'lean' it will run cooler :) running 'rich' it will run cooler, but again with a CM map you can set up what you want, especially for a turbo car.

you use the lean trip AFR to protect against running lean.

You use EGT to do whatever you want with the custom tables...any EGT, or any input really.

Cheers. Just found there is a target adder f(egt1) in Run Mode Fuelling / Corrections / Closed Loop Lambda which is set to 0 for all breakpoints. (I'll not be changing that)

Was just curious really. So is EGT2 for 2nd bank if the engine was a V configuration?
Does it matter if EGT1 is pre or post-turbo?

edit: is there any easy way to search the CAL for egt1 so I can see whereabouts it is referenced?

EGT1 and 2 are whatever you want them to be.

Cal, Goto and type "EGT", or whatever you want to look for.

That is a really basic function table, its better when you do your own CM map as in one customers car below, running KT8 and just one of the tables used. This is doing what you are asking about, allowing maximum engine performance up to a certain EGT limit then cooling the engine in this case to keep knock under control as an example. EGT max is useful here for obvious reasons.

In the above you will see the very real problems of not using one of my most advanced probes, Ironically I have exactly the other brand mentioned here and they are around ~100 degree's C less than the figures my probes give, so take the ultimate reading at your own risk and to that of your components.

Keep in mind even my probes do not report the exact temperature, as highlighted many times here over pages they are well below what the actual temperature is when you compare to a fine wire (0.3mm diameter) element, this is something allot of people do not realize with these measures.

The other aspect is the stain relief where the probe wires are joined to the matching TC wire (under the spring in the main body) they have a nasty habit of breaking there when made poorly (IE: silicone), we used the highest grade of motor sport specific hi temperature resistant potting compound that really helps counter these 'random' breakages, that can and do happen especially on high vibration 4cylinder engine configurations.

Regardless of the brand type style you use, try to take into account the very real issues of using a badly designed (too stupidly big diameter, and heavily insulated exposed types, grossly over sized open element types) and just aim for a lower temperature threshold as your limit, cause remember you are never really measuring the temperature of the gas rather the temperature of the probe, and this varies greatly as I have shown based on how they are designed and made ;)
