Newbie question - connecting to a laptop for the first time

Hi, complete newb question here. I want to connect my syvecs to my laptop after this weekend as I have some track time on saturday. I have the software downloaded from here. Is it just a case of plugging it in? I tried once with no luck but put that down to a cheap ebay cable, I have a proper cat6 network cable now ready to use.
So do I plug it in, open sdata, click device, click read? Anything else I need to do?
Also any tips for where to go and what to look at would be useful, I'm wary about going in and deleting something I shouldn't!
