Re: Connection to Plex

Good info from all,

Just to be clear. I connected the Plex to the I/O since I did not know or was not aware that it could be connected to the S6 since I had the I/O already slaved. I do need or want the GPS data sent to the S6. I am just trying to figure out the correct way.

1. I did contact Plex about this and after the correspondence I was told it should work. Still waiting to hear back from them.
2. I have updated the firmware of the plex and downloaded the Syvec set up. ( disappointed that it does not have the Syvec pages as what you see on the web site.) I have requested this config from Plex but no answer. The plex SDM should come loaded with that in my mind.
3. I have configured the S6 per the plex instructions on the datastream set up. I did that first in the attempt for connection on arrival of the dash.
4. Once custom CAN is selected in the Scal datastream the same error appears ( only 1 CAN connection allowed), this happens if the CAN is connected or disconnected. I tried connecting to the I/O port with and without a termination resistor, Tried connecting the CAN to the S6 side with or with out resistor, before and after the resistor to the I/O port. Basically every configuration I could think of. Also I do not have a screen shot but if I select any of the LR data to be streamed the error comes up as not allowed.

So far I am pretty bummed out about the whole thing. The only reason I purchased the Plex SDM was to utilize the GPS to send to S6 for traction control, control the Cal switches and turn the ALS and launch control on or off with the joy pad. If I can not use all of those it is basically useless for my application.

You CANNOT have I/O assigned to a slave, AND have GPS receive enabled. It's nothing to do with terminations, connections, or whatever - the ECU will complain as the config is invalid. The single CANbus cannot support both.

It's a shame that this is not clearer from Syvecs/Plex.

The Plex will have the Syvecs page...that said, on the S6 it doesnt really serve much purpose.

Again I think this is partly down to the lack of generic receive. Although really....as novel as it might appear controlling Cal selections via the joystick etc, for me it would be a slow pain in the arse. Simple rotary switches are hard to beat, with the only downside they use inputs.
Although dont think ALS control was ever an option there anyway, just Cal selections. These probably work on an S8 which is what the dash had originally been configured for.
I think I might have been one of the first S6 users and discovered a lot early on. But it is still a great dash.

Obviously the expander just throws a spanner in the works

If you email me whatever config you used I can have a look at it, or upload it to the forum. But the page you refer to is called "ecu control" on your config.

As for the dash actually working, really all that should need is the CAN data transmitted from the ecu correctly. What you have configured to transmit does need to match the receive configuration with the Plex.

Originally this was probably more simple as the CAN receive was not configurable. Ultimately configurable is probably better...it just adds complexity.

Are you saying there is no custom CAN function when there is an I/O expander hooked up ? Do the expanders not either replicate or pass through the ecu CAN output ?

Could you use the replicate CAN output via RS232 port and use that to feed CAN to the dash ?

Although ultimately it does seem your desire to receive GPS from anything is now going to be tricky with any S6 ecu

I doubt the problem is feeding data *to* the dash. That will work fine with the Plex connected to the second CAN port of the X10.

It's the reverse direction (Plex->S6) that will not work.

Most likely I probably do not have the dash data parameters set up correctly and or the S6. My lack of knowledge on this subject makes it hard to explain. I just finished loading the car on the trailer so I can take it to LMS-EFI, Chris should be able to fix the issues I am having. If not I will touch base with stevieturbo on the set up I have. regardless I will post what I find and what I did wrong just to let someone else learn from my mistakes. I did find somewhere on the forum that it was stated that it would work on the ECU side of the CAN with the I/O port but I cant seem to find that post again.

Plex will work either side of the x10, but Ecu will complain, as you've found, if you have enabled any GPS receive modes in Scal.

If the ECU is no longer complaining, and there's still no dash display, then it will be that the datastream isn't set right.

The instructions are online, and detail the standard CAN layout for the Syvecs output and a suitable config for the Plex receive.

That should at least give you a starting point

UPDATE:
Well, the S6 and I/O module with the Plex dash did not work out. I upgraded to the S8 to eliminate the I/O module, hopefully all this will work together. Also the S8 might fix some of my other mysterious issues I was having with other functions as the DBW, Cal switches and wheel speed sensors would not work correctly.

great finally some progress!
p.s. got lots of customers using Syvecs S8 with Plex 700 and D5 dash's with all those items you mentioned working fine, so with a competent calibrator you will be a.o.k. now ;)

It just sounds like the issue here is simply the single CAN functionality of the S6.

It just makes trying to run multiple CAN devices attached to it....difficult or not possible.

I had no issues at all with my S6 and SDM500 including receiving GPS and Accel data. But I know I couldnt have added an expander to it as well.

S8 is always a good upgrade though
